Kitchen Lighting Guide

A complete guide to lighting your kitchen beautifully — from the three layers of light and colour temperature to under-cabinet LEDs, pendants, spotlights and smart controls.

The Three Layers of Light

Great kitchen lighting is never a single overhead light. Professional designers always work in three distinct layers — each with a different purpose. Getting all three right creates a kitchen that works brilliantly for cooking, socialising and everything in between.

Ambient (General) Light

The base layer of light that illuminates the whole room. Typically provided by ceiling downlights or a central ceiling fitting. Should be bright enough to navigate the space safely but ideally dimmable so it can be reduced when cooking is done and you want a relaxed atmosphere. Think of this as the “room fill” layer.

Task Light

Focused light exactly where you need it for safe, precise work — chopping, reading recipes, checking food colour and washing up. Primarily provided by under-cabinet LEDs above worktops and hob lighting. This layer should be bright and shadow-free. Poorly planned task lighting is the most common kitchen lighting mistake — standing with your back to the main light casts a shadow exactly where you need to see.

Accent & Decorative Light

Light that adds drama, depth and personality. Pendant lights over an island, LED strips inside glazed cabinets, plinth lighting, feature wall washing, or a statement chandelier. This layer is about mood and visual interest — it makes a kitchen feel designed rather than just functional. Even a single well-chosen pendant can transform the atmosphere of an open-plan kitchen.

The Golden Rule: Always Have Separate Circuits

Wire your ambient, task and accent lighting on separate circuits, each with its own dimmer. This gives you full control over the atmosphere at any time of day — bright and clinical for prep, warm and low for dinner, dramatic and moody for entertaining. A single switched circuit for the whole kitchen is the biggest lighting mistake you can make during a renovation — fix it at first-fix stage when it’s easy, not after the kitchen is installed.

Colour Temperature

Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K) and describes how warm or cool the light appears. It’s one of the most important and most misunderstood decisions in kitchen lighting. The wrong colour temperature can make a beautiful kitchen feel cold, clinical or muddy.

2700K — Warm White

The warmest commonly available LED temperature. Creates a cosy, relaxed, almost candlelit atmosphere. Best for open-plan kitchens that double as living and dining spaces where warmth of mood matters most.

  • Best for: traditional, country, warm-toned kitchens
  • Works with: cream, warm grey, timber, copper tones
  • Caution: can make cool-toned kitchens look muddy
  • Most popular temperature for residential dining spaces

3000K — Warm Neutral

The sweet spot for most UK kitchens. Warm enough to feel inviting, bright enough for clear task visibility. Flatters virtually all cabinet colours and worktop materials without the clinical feel of cooler temperatures.

  • Works with: almost any colour palette
  • The most widely recommended temperature by kitchen designers
  • Good balance of warmth and task visibility

4000K — Cool White

A crisp, clear, cool white light. Enhances the appearance of white and grey kitchens and works well in very contemporary, minimal spaces. Can feel clinical in isolation — best used alongside 3000K accent lighting to add warmth.

  • Best for: ultra-modern, handleless, white/grey kitchens
  • Works with: concrete, stainless steel, cool stone
  • Caution: unflattering for skin tones; avoid in dining areas
  • Popular for under-cabinet task lighting only
Don’t Mix Colour Temperatures

Mixing 2700K pendants with 4000K downlights in the same sightline creates a jarring, incoherent look. Choose one temperature for your ambient and task layers and stick to it throughout. If you want to add warmth for accent lighting (e.g. inside cabinets or plinth), you can go one step warmer — so 2700K accent alongside 3000K task light works well. But never go cooler for accent than ambient.

Lumens & Brightness

Watts measure energy consumption — not brightness. Lumens measure actual light output. Since the switch to LED, understanding lumens is essential to specifying the right brightness for each zone of your kitchen.

  • General ambient (per m²): 300–500 lm/m²
  • Worktop task lighting: 500–800 lm/m²
  • Hob area: 500+ lm/m² (high task demand)
  • Sink area: 500 lm/m²
  • Island pendant: 400–800 lm per pendant (2–3 pendants typical)
  • Inside cabinets: 200–300 lm per shelf
  • Plinth/accent: 100–200 lm/m (linear strip)

How Many Downlights?

A useful rule of thumb for recessed downlights in a kitchen:

  • Divide ceiling height (mm) by 2 to get spacing in mm
  • E.g. 2400mm ceiling ÷ 2 = 1200mm spacing between lights
  • For a 4m × 3m kitchen at 2.4m ceiling: typically 6–9 downlights
  • Position lights over the worktop, not over the cabinets, to avoid casting shadows on the work surface
  • Avoid placing a downlight directly above where you stand — it shines on the back of your head, not the worktop

Downlights & Spotlights

Recessed downlights (also called pot lights or can lights) are the dominant choice for ambient lighting in modern fitted kitchens. They’re unobtrusive, versatile and work with virtually any ceiling height. Understanding the different types helps you specify the right product for each application.

Fixed vs Adjustable

Fixed downlights direct light straight down. Best for general ambient lighting on a flat ceiling. Simple, neat appearance.

Adjustable/tilt downlights can be angled to direct light where it’s needed. Ideal for accent lighting, wall washing or highlighting worktops at an angle. Essential if your ceiling has a slope or you want to wash light across a feature wall or splashback.

Fire-Rated Downlights

In most UK homes, downlights that penetrate the ceiling between floors must be fire-rated. Fire-rated downlights have an intumescent seal that expands in a fire to maintain the fire integrity of the floor above for 30–90 minutes.

  • Required where there is a floor above (all intermediate floors)
  • Not required on ground floor with no ceiling above
  • Check: Building Regs Part B (fire safety)
  • Look for: 30, 60 or 90 minute fire rating
  • Most modern quality downlights are fire-rated as standard

Downlights above a sink or hob require an appropriate IP (Ingress Protection) rating:

  • IP20: Standard — dry areas only
  • IP44: Splash-proof — minimum for above sink
  • IP65: Dust-tight & jet-proof — best for above hob or very steamy kitchens
  • Check zones (see IP Ratings section below)

Standard downlight cutout sizes:

  • 68mm: Most common GU10 housing
  • 70mm: Slightly larger, some integrated LEDs
  • 75mm / 82mm: Larger format for higher output
  • Minimum ceiling void depth: typically 65–75mm
  • Check void depth before ordering — especially in renovations with insulation
  • Slim-profile fire-rated options available for tight voids (as little as 35mm)

GU10 vs Integrated LED

GU10 fittings use replaceable GU10 LED bulbs. Easy to change colour temperature or replace a failed bulb. More flexible long-term.

Integrated LED downlights have the LED built into the housing. More efficient, slimmer profile, longer lifespan (often 25,000+ hours). When the LED fails, the whole fitting must be replaced.

  • GU10: flexibility, easy bulb swap
  • Integrated: efficiency, slimmer fit, longer life
  • For most kitchens: GU10 gives more long-term flexibility

Track & Surface Spotlights

Where recessing into the ceiling isn’t possible (concrete ceiling, conservation area, listed building), surface-mounted track spotlights or bar spotlights are an excellent alternative.

  • Single, twin or multi-head bar spotlights
  • Fully adjustable beam direction
  • Industrial/architectural aesthetic — very on-trend
  • Track systems: add, remove or reposition heads at any time
  • Magnetic track lighting: ultra-sleek, modular system

Under-Cabinet Lighting

Under-cabinet lighting is the single most impactful lighting addition in any kitchen — it eliminates the shadow cast by your body when you stand at the worktop, directly illuminates your task, and creates a beautiful warm glow that lifts the whole feel of the kitchen. It should be considered non-negotiable in any quality kitchen fit-out.

LED Strip Lights

The most popular under-cabinet option. A flexible strip of LEDs on a self-adhesive tape that can be cut to length and fitted into an aluminium profile channel for a clean, professional finish.

  • Profile channels: surface-mount, recessed or corner
  • Diffuser lens: opal (even, soft glow) or clear (brighter, visible dots)
  • Always use a diffuser for under-cabinet — bare strip is harsh and shows hotspots
  • Connect to a driver/transformer (12V or 24V systems)
  • 24V strip recommended over 12V: brighter, more consistent, longer runs
  • Density: 60 LEDs/m (budget) to 120+ LEDs/m (premium, smooth light)

Recessed Under-Cabinet Spotlights

Small fixed or adjustable spotlights recessed into the underside of the cabinet. More discrete than strip lights and provide a focused beam onto the worktop. Can look very premium when done well.

  • Typical size: 35mm–55mm diameter cutout
  • Usually wired in series from one cabinet to the next
  • Best for: frameless handleless cabinets with thick bases
  • Less even coverage than strip — space carefully to avoid dark spots

Positioning & Installation Tips

  • Mount the strip at the front of the cabinet underside, not the back — forward placement illuminates the worktop and splashback, not just the back wall
  • Conceal wiring inside the cabinet to the nearest socket or wired connection
  • Use a connector strip (not solder) for field connections for reliability
  • Add a sensor or switch accessible from the front of the cabinet
  • Ensure aluminium profile is fully adhered — press for 30 seconds and leave 24 hours before powering
  • Run power via a switched fused spur above the wall cabinet for a clean installation
Continuous vs Interrupted Runs

For the cleanest look, use a continuous LED profile across the entire length of the wall cabinets without breaks at joins. Use angled connectors at internal corners. This creates a seamless ribbon of light rather than separate sections per cabinet. A professional kitchen electrician will achieve this invisibly during first fix, routing the cable inside the wall cabinet carcasses.

Pendant & Feature Lighting

Pendants are the jewellery of kitchen lighting — they make a design statement, define zones and add warmth. They’re particularly powerful over kitchen islands and breakfast bars where they simultaneously provide task light and create a visual centrepiece.

Metal cage or exposed filament pendants in black, brass or copper. The most popular kitchen pendant style in the UK. Works with Shaker, contemporary and industrial kitchens alike. Warm Edison bulbs (2200K) in these fittings create beautiful ambient warmth.

  • Materials: black steel, brass, copper, bronze
  • Best bulb: G95 or ST64 filament LED (2200–2700K)
  • Group in odd numbers — 3 or 5 pendants in a row

Clear, smoked or opal glass globes or shades. Timeless, versatile and flattering to all kitchen styles. Smoked glass pendants are particularly on-trend, softening the look while giving a contemporary edge.

  • Opal glass: diffuses light evenly, hides bulb

Statement Shades

Large drum, cone or flared shades in fabric, metal or lacquered finishes. A single large statement pendant over a kitchen island or dining table anchors the space and declares the design intent.

  • Size rule: pendant shade diameter (cm) ≈ table/island width (cm) ÷ 3
  • E.g. 90cm island → ~30cm pendant shade diameter
  • Or group 2–3 smaller pendants for same visual weight

Pendant Height Guide

Getting the height right is critical — too high and they lose their visual impact; too low and they obstruct sightlines.

  • Over an island/worktop: bottom of shade 700–800mm above surface
  • Over a dining table: bottom of shade 650–750mm above table
  • In a hallway/open space: minimum 2100mm from floor to bottom of shade
  • Adjust for ceiling height — higher ceilings can take lower-hanging pendants
  • Always fit pendants on a flexible cable so height can be adjusted after installation

A kitchen chandelier might sound extravagant but works beautifully in large open-plan kitchen-diners, country houses and high-ceiling spaces. Modern interpretations in black steel or brushed brass are a world away from the traditional crystal chandelier and suit contemporary kitchens perfectly.

  • Sputnik, star-burst and linear bar chandeliers are very contemporary
  • Traditional crystal or drum chandeliers suit country/period kitchens

Island & Breakfast Bar Lighting

The kitchen island is often the focal point of the whole room, and its lighting needs to do double duty — providing good task light for food prep while also creating a visual centrepiece that draws the eye and defines the social hub of the space.

  • Materials: black steel, brushed brass, brushed nickel

For the best island lighting, combine pendant or bar fitting (for the visual) with 1–2 adjustable ceiling downlights (for reliable task light). The pendants provide the atmosphere; the downlights ensure the surface is well lit regardless of pendant output.

  • Position downlights slightly to the side of the island, not centred
  • Angle adjustable downlights toward the worktop surface
  • Run pendants and downlights on separate dimmer circuits

Ceiling & Surface Lighting

When recessing downlights isn’t possible — on concrete ceilings, in ground-floor flats, or in rooms with restricted void space — surface-mounted options offer excellent alternatives that can be equally stylish.

Flush & Semi-Flush Ceiling Lights

Close-to-ceiling fittings that provide general ambient light without a significant void requirement. Modern LED flush fittings are slim, energy efficient and available in a wide range of styles from minimalist discs to statement geometric shapes.

  • Ideal for low-ceiling kitchens
  • Avoid a single central light — shadows will be cast everywhere
  • Two or more flush fittings or a large flush panel works better
  • LED panel lights: very even, clinical — good for utility areas

Track Lighting Systems

Surface-mounted track with moveable spotlight heads. A genuinely excellent solution for kitchens where recessing isn’t possible. The industrial aesthetic suits contemporary kitchens, and individual heads can be repositioned to suit your workflow.

  • 2-circuit track: alternately switch groups of heads
  • Magnetic track: ultra-thin, add/remove modules magnetically
  • Heads: spotlight, downlight, pendant adaptor, flood

Ceiling Roses & Statement Fittings

For period, farmhouse and traditional kitchen styles, a decorative ceiling rose with a statement pendant or small chandelier brings character and warmth that no downlight can replicate.

  • Always put on a dimmer for flexibility
  • Position centrally over the dining table, not the kitchen worktop
  • Pair with under-cabinet task lights for a complete scheme

Plinth & Toe-Kick Lighting

Plinth (or toe-kick) lighting sits at the base of kitchen units, creating a floating effect that adds depth and drama to the space. It’s a subtle detail that elevates a kitchen from functional to designed. Often overlooked, it’s one of the most cost-effective lighting upgrades available.

The most common approach: LED strip fitted inside an aluminium channel routed into or behind the plinth board. Light washes across the floor creating a glowing base to the kitchen.

Illuminating the inside of wall cabinets, larder units and glass-fronted display cabinets adds depth and dimension to a kitchen scheme. It transforms a practical storage unit into a visual feature and makes finding items dramatically easier.

LED strip or individual spotlights inside glazed wall cabinets highlight glassware, crockery and decorative items. One of the most effective ways to add warmth and visual interest to a kitchen.

IP Ratings & Kitchen Zones

IP (Ingress Protection) ratings define how resistant a light fitting is to moisture and dust. In kitchens — particularly near the sink, hob and steam-generating appliances — choosing the correct IP rating is a safety and compliance requirement, not just a preference.

Understanding IP Ratings

An IP rating has two digits. The first (0–6) is dust protection; the second (0–8) is moisture protection.

  • IP20: Protected against fingers. No water protection. Standard dry rooms.
  • IP44: Protected against small objects + splashing water from any direction.
  • IP54: Dust-protected + splash-proof.
  • IP65: Fully dust-tight + protected against low-pressure water jets.
  • IP67/IP68: Full immersion rated — used in outdoor and wet-room applications.

Kitchen Lighting Zones

Unlike bathrooms, kitchens don’t have officially defined mandatory zones in BS 7671, but best practice guidance — and common sense — dictates appropriate IP ratings by proximity to water:

  • Within 600mm horizontally of a sink: minimum IP44
  • Directly above a hob (within 1200mm): minimum IP44, IP65 recommended due to steam and grease
  • Above a dishwasher: IP44 minimum
  • General kitchen: IP20 acceptable (but IP44 throughout recommended for longevity)
  • External/covered outdoor kitchen: minimum IP44, IP65 preferred

Hob & Steam Considerations

The area above and around the hob is the most hostile environment for lighting in a domestic kitchen. Grease particles, steam and occasional flare-ups from cooking can damage fittings rated for dry environments.

  • Never install IP20 fittings directly above a hob
  • Extractor hood integrated lighting handles the hob zone directly
  • For exposed ceiling above hob: IP65 downlight recommended
  • Clean any fittings above the hob regularly — grease accumulation is a fire risk

Dimming & Smart Controls

Dimming transforms a kitchen from a single-mode functional space into one that adapts to cooking, dining, entertaining and winding down. Smart lighting takes this further, allowing scenes, schedules and voice control. Planning your control system at first-fix stage is critical — retrofitting smart lighting is possible but always more expensive and less elegant.

LED Dimmers: What to Know

Not all dimmers work with all LEDs. Using an incompatible dimmer causes flickering, buzzing, limited dimming range or LED failure. Always check compatibility.

  • Use a trailing edge dimmer for most LED drivers and integrated LEDs
  • Leading edge dimmers work with some LEDs but can cause problems
  • Check the dimmer’s minimum and maximum load — LEDs have very low wattage and some dimmers need a minimum load resistor if total wattage is too low
  • Leading brands: Lutron, Varilight, Schneider, Hamilton
  • Always check the dimmer and LED bulb/driver are on each other’s compatibility list

Smart lighting allows app control, voice control, scenes and scheduling. Options range from simple smart bulbs to fully wired professional systems.

  • Philips Hue: Most popular consumer smart lighting. Bulbs and GU10s. App + Alexa/Google. No rewiring needed.
  • Lutron Caséta / RA2: Professional-grade smart dimming. Extremely reliable. Requires specialist installation.
  • KNX / Control4 / Crestron: Whole-home automation. Full scene control, scheduling, integration. Premium cost.
  • Zigbee/Z-Wave smart switches: Budget smart control. Works with existing wiring and most LED fittings.

Programming scenes into your smart system or simply labelling your dimmer circuits makes lighting intuitive for everyone in the household. Suggested scenes for a kitchen:

  • “Cooking”: Task lights 100%, ambient 80%, accent off
  • “Dining”: Ambient 30%, pendants 70%, plinth 40%, task off
  • “Morning”: Ambient 60%, task 80%, no accent
  • “Evening”: Ambient 20%, pendants 40%, plinth 30%, cabinet 60%
  • “Night”: Plinth only at 10% — safe navigation without disturbing sleep

Switch Placement

  • Always put kitchen lighting on multiple switch points — at the kitchen entry, near the hob and near the dining area
  • Two-way or multi-way switching means you can control the room from wherever you are
  • Dimmer plate position: 1400mm from floor is standard; keep consistent with other switches in the room
  • For smart lighting: use smart switches in the same positions so the room looks “normal” even without a smartphone
  • Consider a master “all off” switch near the kitchen exit

Almost all new kitchen lighting today uses LED technology. Understanding the key specifications helps you choose the right product and avoid poor-quality LEDs that fade, flicker or render colours badly.

Colour Rendering Index (CRI)

CRI measures how accurately a light source renders colours compared to natural sunlight (CRI 100). In a kitchen, good CRI is important for seeing true food colours when cooking and for the kitchen looking its best.

  • CRI 80+: Minimum acceptable for general lighting
  • CRI 90+: Recommended for kitchens — colours look natural and vibrant
  • CRI 95+: Premium. Food looks appetising, materials look as intended
  • Cheap LEDs often have CRI 70–80 — food looks washed out, colours are dull
  • Always buy CRI 90+ for kitchen lighting

LED Lifespan & Rated Hours

  • Good quality LED: 25,000–50,000 rated hours
  • At 8 hours/day use: 25,000 hrs = ~8.5 years; 50,000 hrs = ~17 years
  • Rated hours = L70: the point at which output falls to 70% of original
  • Heat is the enemy of LED lifespan — ensure good airflow around fittings
  • Do not encase integrated LEDs in insulation without a fire-rated fitting designed for the purpose
  • Cheap LEDs: often 5,000–10,000 hours — failing within 2–3 years

Beam Angles

The beam angle determines how widely the light spreads. The right angle depends on the application:

  • 10–25° (Spot): Tight accent beam. Feature lighting, artwork.
  • 25–40° (Narrow flood): Worktop task lighting, accent lighting
  • 40–60° (Flood): General ambient downlight. Most common for kitchen ceiling.
  • 60–120° (Wide flood): Very wide spread. Good for low ceilings where spacing is tight.
  • Under-cabinet strip: 120° wide flood for even coverage

Avoiding Flicker

LED flicker — imperceptible to the eye but detectable by cameras and potentially fatiguing over time — is caused by poor quality drivers or incompatible dimmers.

  • Look for: “flicker-free” or “low flicker” specification
  • Flicker index <0.1 is generally considered acceptable
  • Quality brand LEDs with quality drivers are almost always flicker-free
  • Flickering after dimmer installation: change to a compatible trailing-edge dimmer

Planning Your Kitchen Lighting Layout

Step 1: Map Your Zones

Mark up your kitchen plan with the key activity zones:

  • Hob and cooking zone
  • Sink and prep zones
  • Island or breakfast bar
  • Dining/sitting area (if open-plan)
  • Storage and display areas
  • Entry/exit points

Each zone needs task light, ambient light and ideally some accent. Plan them separately.

Step 2: Plan Your Circuits

  • Circuit 1: Ambient downlights (all ceiling spots) — 1 or 2 dimmer switches
  • Circuit 2: Under-cabinet task lights — separate dimmer or smart switch
  • Circuit 3: Island pendants — dimmer switch
  • Circuit 4: Plinth / accent — smart switch or timer
  • Circuit 5: Inside cabinet lights — door sensors or separate switch
  • Minimum: 3 circuits. Ideal: 5 circuits for full flexibility

Step 3: Position Downlights Correctly

  • Position ambient downlights over the centre of the floor space, not over the cabinets
  • For worktop lighting: a downlight 300–400mm from the wall cabinet face will illuminate the worktop, not cast shadow
  • Keep downlights at least 500mm from any wall to avoid “scalloping” (half-moon shadow on the wall)
  • Mark out positions with tape on the floor before drilling — live with them for a day
  • Never position a downlight directly over where you stand at the sink or hob

Step 4: First Fix Checklist

  • ✓ Cable drops for all ceiling downlight positions
  • ✓ Cable to under-cabinet position in each wall cabinet run
  • ✓ Cable drop for each island pendant position
  • ✓ Cable to plinth level around the perimeter
  • ✓ Cable to inside-cabinet positions (top inside each relevant unit)
  • ✓ Switch cables to all dimmer/switch positions
  • ✓ Dimmer specifications agreed with electrician before fitting selection
Part P — Electrical Regulations

In England and Wales, new kitchen lighting circuits and any rewiring in a kitchen must be notified to Building Control or carried out by a Part P registered electrician (e.g. NICEIC or NAPIT registered). Kitchens are a “special location” under Part P due to proximity to water. Always use a qualified, registered electrician for kitchen lighting installations — not only for safety but to ensure your home insurance remains valid.

A well-lit kitchen typically invests 5–10% of the overall kitchen budget on lighting (including electrician costs).
