Choosing the Right Kitchen Floor
The kitchen floor has to work harder than any other in the house — it faces dropped pans, water spills, constant foot traffic, chair scraping and the occasional grease splash. The right choice balances your lifestyle, kitchen style, budget and whether you have underfloor heating.

Water & Kitchen Floors
The kitchen is a wet environment. Even the best wood floors can suffer around a dishwasher leak or sink splash zone. Key points:

Ceramic & Porcelain Tiles
Tiles are the most popular kitchen floor choice in the UK for good reason — fully waterproof, extremely durable and available in an almost infinite range of sizes, colours and effects. Porcelain is denser and harder than ceramic and is the better choice for kitchens.
Ceramic vs Porcelain
Ceramic tiles are made from red or white clay fired at lower temperatures. More affordable but softer, more porous and prone to chipping. Better suited to walls than high-traffic kitchen floors.
Porcelain tiles are fired at higher temperatures, making them denser, harder and virtually non-porous. The best choice for kitchen floors — they handle everything from dropped cast iron pans to flooded dishwashers.

Tile Sizes

Slip Ratings

Grout Choices
Grout is often an afterthought but makes a big difference to the final look and maintenance:

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)
LVT has transformed the flooring market in the last decade. It combines realistic wood and stone visuals with 100% waterproofing, underfloor heating compatibility, and a warm, comfortable feel underfoot — at a fraction of the cost of real stone or wood. It’s now the fastest-growing kitchen flooring choice in the UK.
What Is LVT?
Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) is a multi-layer synthetic flooring product. The layers typically include a backing layer, a rigid or flexible core, a photographic design layer (the visual), and a clear wear layer that protects the surface.
- Rigid Core LVT (SPC/WPC): Stone Plastic Composite or Wood Plastic Composite core. More stable, better for uneven subfloors
- Flexible LVT: Thinner, more affordable, glued down or loose-lay

- Do not use a thick foam underlay — use a specialist UFH underlay or none at all
- Max recommended surface temperature: 27°C
- Compatible with both electric and water UFH systems

Solid & Engineered Wood Flooring
Wood flooring brings warmth, character and a timeless quality to kitchen spaces. For kitchens, engineered wood is strongly preferred over solid wood — it’s more dimensionally stable in the presence of moisture and temperature changes, and is fully compatible with underfloor heating.
Solid vs Engineered Wood
Solid wood is milled from a single piece of timber. It can be sanded and refinished many times. However, it expands and contracts significantly with humidity — making it risky in kitchens near sinks, dishwashers and steam.
Engineered wood has a real wood top layer (the veneer, typically 2–6mm thick) bonded to multiple layers of plywood or HDF. This construction resists movement from moisture and temperature changes, making it far more suitable for kitchens.

- Both look identical once installed — only the construction differs
Wood Species for Kitchens
- Oak: By far the most popular. Hard, durable, takes stains and oils beautifully. Available in endless grades and finishes.

Engineered wood must be left in the room it will be installed in for at least 48–72 hours before fitting (longer in very humid conditions). This allows the boards to adjust to the room’s temperature and humidity and prevents post-installation gapping or buckling. Leave the packaging open and stack loosely to allow air circulation.
Laminate Flooring
Laminate is one of the most affordable flooring options and has improved enormously in quality. Modern laminate can replicate wood and stone very convincingly, and AC4/AC5 rated products are genuinely durable in kitchen use — though they remain vulnerable to standing water at joins.
AC Ratings Explained
Laminate is graded by its Abrasion Class (AC) rating — the higher, the more durable:
- AC1–AC2: Light domestic only — not suitable for kitchens
- AC3: General domestic use — minimum for kitchen
- AC4: Heavy domestic / light commercial — good for busy kitchens
- AC5: Commercial grade — maximum durability, best for kitchens
- Look for: “moisture-resistant” or “water-resistant” core for kitchen use

Water & Laminate
The biggest risk with laminate in kitchens is water ingress at joins. Even moisture-resistant laminate will swell and delaminate if water sits on join lines or gets beneath the boards. Key precautions:
- Seal joins with laminate floor sealant after installation
- Use silicone bead where floor meets kickboards and appliances
- A dishwasher leak or burst pipe will almost certainly ruin laminate
- Wipe up spills immediately — do not let water pool
Natural Stone Flooring
Natural stone floors bring unmatched character and a sense of permanence. Limestone, slate, travertine, marble and granite have been used in homes for centuries — each develops a unique patina over time. They’re particularly popular in country, farmhouse and period property kitchens.
Limestone
The classic country kitchen floor. Warm creamy tones, subtle texture. Softer and more porous than slate or granite — must be sealed and maintained carefully. Develops a wonderful patina with age.

Granite (Floor)

Most natural stone floors (limestone, travertine, terracotta, marble) should be sealed before grouting and again after grouting before use. Use a penetrating impregnator sealer — not a surface coating. Re-seal annually or when the water bead test shows absorption. Slate and dense granite often need little or no sealing.
Polished Concrete Flooring
Polished concrete has moved from industrial warehouses to high-end domestic kitchens over the last decade. Seamless, sculptural and utterly contemporary, it suits open-plan spaces where an uninterrupted flow of floor is desired. It can be poured in-situ or applied as a microcement overlay on existing floors.
In-Situ Concrete
Poured directly onto the subfloor and ground/polished to the desired finish. Requires a structural assessment — the weight is significant and it must be poured on a solid sub-base.

Underfloor Heating & Kitchen Flooring
Underfloor heating (UFH) transforms a cold hard floor into one of the most pleasurable features of any kitchen. It’s particularly effective under tile and stone, which store and radiate heat beautifully. Here’s what you need to know when combining UFH with kitchen flooring.
Electric vs Water UFH
Electric UFH (mat or cable systems) is cheaper to install but more expensive to run — best for smaller kitchen areas or single rooms.
Water (wet) UFH is more expensive to install but significantly cheaper to run — especially with a heat pump. Ideal for whole-house or whole-floor systems.

Flooring & Tog Ratings
The total insulation value (Tog rating) of your floor covering and underlay must be low enough to allow heat to pass through efficiently. Guidelines:

- Porcelain tile: ~0.01 Tog (ideal)

Subfloor Preparation
The subfloor is as important as the flooring itself. A poorly prepared subfloor will cause tiles to crack, LVT to telegraph imperfections, wood to squeak and laminate to bounce. Always prepare the subfloor correctly before laying any new floor.
Concrete Subfloor
- Check for dampness with a damp meter or polythene sheet test — if damp is present, DPM (damp proof membrane) must be applied before any floor covering
- Level high spots with an angle grinder; fill low spots with self-levelling compound
- Tolerance: 3mm over 1.8m for most floors
- Allow new concrete/screed to cure fully (typically 1 day per mm thickness) before laying

Timber Suspended Floor

Use self-levelling compound to bring the floor within tolerance before laying.
If you are removing old vinyl floor tiles or sheet vinyl in a home built before 1985, stop and test for asbestos before proceeding. Vinyl floor tiles and adhesive from this period commonly contained asbestos fibres. Do not sand, scrape or break up old tiles before testing. Contact a UKAS-accredited testing lab or ARCA-registered asbestos contractor to sample and assess before any removal work.
Laying Patterns & Design Tips
The pattern you choose for laying tiles or planks changes the entire feel of the space. Here are the most popular options and when to use them.
Straight / Grid
Standard square or rectangular tiles laid in straight rows. Classic, timeless. Easiest to lay and least wastage.
Brick / Offset

Herringbone
