A well-planned kitchen layout is the foundation of a successful kitchen renovation. The most beautifully styled kitchen will frustrate you daily if the layout hasn't been thought through โ poorly placed appliances, inadequate worktop space and awkward traffic flow are the most common complaints from homeowners after a kitchen installation.
This guide covers every layout type used in UK homes, the key dimensions you need to know, and a practical planning process to help you get it right the first time.
The Kitchen Work Triangle
The work triangle is one of the most enduring principles in kitchen design, developed in the 1940s and still the starting point for any functional layout. It describes the relationship between the three primary work stations: the refrigerator (food storage), the sink (preparation and cleaning) and the hob or cooker (cooking).
The principle states that these three points should form a triangle, and the combined length of all three sides should be between 4 and 8 metres. Each individual leg should be between 1.2 and 2.7 metres. A triangle that is too small creates a cramped, colliding workspace; too large and you're walking unnecessary distances during cooking.
Fridge / Storage
Where food enters the kitchen. Ideally near the entrance to avoid crossing the cooking zone with groceries.
Sink / Preparation
The busiest point in most kitchens โ used for washing, prep and cleanup. Ideally between the fridge and hob.
Hob / Cooking
The cooking zone. Place with good ventilation above and adequate worktop on both sides for landing hot pans safely.

Galley Kitchen Layout

Compact & EfficientA galley kitchen features two parallel runs of units facing each other, creating a corridor between them. The name comes from ship galleys โ where maximum efficiency in a tight space was essential. It is the most space-efficient kitchen layout per square metre and remains the professional chef's kitchen of choice for exactly that reason.
In UK homes, galley kitchens are most common in Victorian and Edwardian terraces, apartments, and narrow extensions. Minimum recommended corridor width is 900mm for a single cook, 1200mm for two people working simultaneously.

L-Shape Kitchen Layout
L-Shape Kitchen
Most VersatileThe L-shape is the most common kitchen layout in UK homes, particularly in semi-detached and detached houses. Units run along two adjacent walls, forming an L. The corner junction requires careful handling โ either a corner unit (often with a carousel mechanism) or a dead space that can be used for a breakfast bar or island.
The L-shape works brilliantly with an open-plan living/dining room because one "arm" of the L faces the room, naturally creating a social kitchen. The hob is typically placed on the longer arm facing into the room so the cook can see guests; the sink on the other arm.

U-Shape Kitchen Layout
U-Shape Kitchen

It is the preferred choice of serious home cooks and works best in larger, more square kitchen rooms. The U-shape naturally creates two corner junctions which require careful planning.
In smaller rooms, a U-shape can feel claustrophobic โ the minimum corridor width applies across the full width of the kitchen. In larger rooms (5m+), a U-shape can incorporate a generous peninsula or even an island within the central space.

Island Kitchen Layout
Kitchen Island
Most DesiredA kitchen island is a freestanding unit positioned in the centre of the kitchen floor space, separate from the perimeter units. It is consistently the most requested kitchen feature in UK homeowner surveys โ but also the most frequently misplanned. The critical mistake is installing an island in a room too small to accommodate it properly.
Islands can serve multiple functions: additional worktop and prep space, hob or sink (with appropriate plumbing/extraction), storage, seating with an overhang, and a social focal point. Not all functions need to be combined โ a simple prep island with storage below is often the most practical choice.

Peninsula Kitchen Layout

It's often a wiser choice than an island for kitchens between 3.5m and 4.5m wide.

Common Kitchen Layout Mistakes
These are the layout errors that homeowners most commonly regret after installation. Most are preventable with good planning โ and almost impossible to fix cheaply once the kitchen is in.
โ Fridge Next to Oven
Placing the refrigerator immediately adjacent to the oven or hob means the fridge motor works constantly against the heat. It increases energy use, shortens fridge life, and puts a heat source where you need cool food.
โ Hob in a Corner
A hob placed in a corner restricts pan handle positioning and makes extraction difficult. It also forces the cook into an awkward position. Always allow adequate worktop on at least one side of the hob โ ideally both.
โ Insufficient Landing Space
Every appliance needs adjacent worktop to land items. The oven door needs 400mm alongside it for hot dishes; the hob needs 300mm each side; the fridge needs space to put down groceries. Missing landing space creates daily frustration.
โ Island Too Small or Too Large
Islands that are too small (under 1000mm long) offer little practical benefit. Islands that are too large in proportion to the room leave insufficient corridor width. Size the island to leave at least 1000mm of clearance on all sides.
โ Poor Socket Placement
Not enough sockets, or sockets in the wrong positions, forces trailing cables across worktops. Plan for a socket every 600mm along the worktop backsplash area โ minimum 4 double sockets in a medium kitchen, plus appliance-specific sockets for dishwasher, fridge and washing machine.
โ Ignoring the Bin
Bin placement is often an afterthought. A bin that is inconvenient to access mid-cooking (requiring opening a drawer or cabinet with dirty hands) becomes a daily irritation. Plan a pull-out bin unit within easy reach of the main prep zone.

Good kitchen planning is a methodical process. Here's the order of decisions that gives you the best results โ from the broadest structural choices down to the detailed specification.
Establish Your Budget
Before anything else, set a realistic total budget including installation, worktops, appliances and contingency. This determines every subsequent decision.
Assess the Space
Measure the room precisely โ including window and door positions, ceiling height, boiler/pipe locations, and the position of existing gas, water and electrical supplies.
Choose Your Layout
Based on room shape, size and how you use a kitchen, select your primary layout type: galley, L, U, island or peninsula. This is the most structural decision.
Fix Appliance Positions
Place your fixed appliances first โ these determine where services need to run. Oven, hob, sink and fridge positions should be finalised before any other unit planning.
Plan Storage in Detail
Walk through every item you store in your kitchen and assign it a location. This reveals whether your planned layout has sufficient storage โ before you commit to it.
